My instructor initially identified me as a natural at surfing but later decided I wasn’t a natural after all (a term for those who surf with their left foot forward) but someone who leads with their right. They’re called goofys. Story of my life.
I’ll spare you the detail. Basically, I loved all the healthy, sun-kissed, this will eventually result in a six-packy feeling of surfing… but I was rubbish at it. So how to capture that sensation without the humiliation? Boogie boards are for those who wear socks with crocs so the good news is there is something super trendy for this summer that segues between the two. It’s called hand planing, above. It’s a turbo-charged version of bodysurfing. You hold the hand plane, a mini surfboard, in your hand (it’s only about 30cm long) and wear fins to power you through the waves. Try it at Watergate Bay in Cornwall; two hours from £6. Just to clarify, that’s not me above. I move too fast for a photographer… yeah right.
